Sasikumar's directorial stint faced a setback after his second project 'Eesan'. The low-budget film received high critical acclaim for its original script, expert direction, screenplay, editing, fresh music, accurate sets and costumes to resurrect Madurai from the 1980s. He has also written and produced the new age gangster movie.

moreover i wrote this to say that its one of the movie that you must watch if you are a movie lover like me.Sasikumar started his cinema career as a director and actor with the 2008 film 'Subramaniapuram'. he gave the movie a great strength by giving songs that suits the 90's. he, normally not approached by any director to do a movie but he is the music teacher of director sasikumar in his school days and so the director roped him in this movie. then i have to tell u about the music director james vasanthan. it was sasikumar's debut film but if you have watched the movie, you won't say its by a debutant. the director brought the backdrops of 90's to his perfection. five uneducated men enjoying their life by doing odd jobs in 1980. subramaniapuram, the name, by itself shows its not an ordinary tamil masala movie. i would say its a must watchable tamil movie. but for everyone's surprise it made a huge impact in tamil movie industry. everyone thought its another commercial tamil movie set in the backdrops of madurai city. i had my exam in the afternoon but i watched this movie in the morning and went for the exam in the evening. when the posters revealed that this movie is set in 90's i waited for its release. it was the movie posters and title itched me to watch this movie.

Once i was studying 10th standard, this movie was released when my half yearly exam was going on in a full swing. Arguably the best Tamil movie ever produced.

Definitely among the best Tamil movies ever produced, 8.7 stars out of 10 for sheer craft. A movie that depicts friendship and love like no other, combined with the dirty side of small town political affiliations. Overall, A great movie to watch despite its violence and gore, the movie is so authentic, it is almost impossible to find another Tamil movie in comparison to Subramaniapuram that is as authentic. The biggest strength of 'Subramaniapuram' was that it had actors playing rooted characters and not stars. Particularly, the character Kanugu, played by Samuthirakani, was well-received by fans, after which Samuthirakani played several such roles in films. Even after all these years, 'Subramaniapuram' is widely known for the performances of actors Samuthirakani and Ganja Karuppu, who played a negative role in the film. Telling the story of an unabashed friendship, the film had Sasikumar and Jai playing the lead roles, while actress Swathi played the leading lady. When Sasikumar made 'Subramaniapuram', none of the actors were such prominent names as they are today. One of the most hard-hitting scenes of 'Subramaniapuram' is the last 20 minutes or so, which turned out to be one of the best-written climax scenes ever. Every department, be it direction, sound or edit was highly praised to reconstruct the episode that happens in the '80s.

'Subramaniapuram' is a glowing example that content is invariably the king and not the stars. More than anything, it's Sasikumar conviction that paved the way for the success.

In other words, Sasikumar stayed true to the genre and didn't pay heed to the commercial compromises such as item songs and needless romance. Unlike many Tamil films of that time, Sasikumar didn't succumb to the pressure of "mass" audience. Needless to say, it all began with 'Subramaniapuram'. In an interview sometime back, Bollywood filmmaker Anurag Kashyap revealed that it was 'Subramaniapuram' that inspired him to make 'Gangs of Wasseypur', which won the hearts of the global audience. In the sense that every character we meet is so real and vulnerable in their own sense. What's surprising even today is how Sasikumar managed to create the 1980s setting so beautifully in 'Subramaniapuram'. Apart from the politics, Subramaniapuram also gives focus to friendship and loyalty, which also forms the theme of the story. Set in Madurai, 'Subramaniapuram' tells the story of a bunch of vagabonds who eventually become a pawn in the game of money and power. Made on a very small budget, 'Subramaniapuram' went on to fetch enough moolah for the producers. It's one of the extremely rare instances where a film won both critically and commercially. Actor-director Sasikumar's directorial debut Subramaniapuram became a landmark film in Tamil cinema for all the right reasons.
